Natural Aesthetics

“Seeing the sky or feeling the sun on your skin can literally make you feel better...our surroundings affect our well-being."- Mack (2001)

The world is rich in nature’s beauty; a sunset view, a panoramic of the sea, a flower garden; it all plays an important factor in the creative industry. Architectural interiors as one of the remarkable features in every space cannot be separated from nature. In this article, I wish to draw your attention on the relationship between nature, our perception and the role that plays out to achieve interiors with mesmerising sceneries. Design approaches are engaged to create environments that are therapeutic, efficient for staff performance, restorative for workers under stress and supportive of family involvement.

Organic, natural elements and tactile experiences help keep us anchored and soothe our souls. Adding texture to interiors can come in many and varied forms, from knobby rubs and rough woven rattan lights, to chamois soft linens and silken timbers. Surrounding ourselves by the environment and enveloping in natural objects, interior spaces shine a spotlight on delicate, individual pieces of furniture and organic and delicate designs typical for this era. Exotic woods, combined with marble and precious metals such as bronze and gold, look sophisticated and expensive. Glass designs emphasise lightness with an implied transparency. Matching textures are particularly important. High matt, leather or sandblasted, all enhance the nobility of the materials within the space.

We’re moving away from crisp, fresh whites to softer, creamier tones – think fleece, oatmeal, noodles and full-cream milk. Steer clear of heavy clotted yellow-whites, however; whites are still carrying a light touch. Creamy whites are comforting and very versatile; they match well with many current interior colours like muted pastels, dusky darks, peaches, rich browns and soft greens. When you’re looking for the right white, make sure you see the Resene Whites & Neutrals collection, which is home to a host of whites as well as darker neutral colours. Look for whites with a code that starts with Y, which means yellow, therefore creamy. Burnt terracotta is a natural accent partner to greens, added here with painted pots and basketry.

Round is in, square is out. Organic shapes don’t come any purer than in round furnishings – round mirrors, round naked light bulbs, round pendant lights, round coffee tables, rounded chair arms, plump round vases. Pick chairs with rounded backs and consoles with shapely curved legs. Your couches should now have rounded arms and round coffee tables will soon become a rage. Consider throwing in a circular rug into the mix to complement the curves of your furniture! Embrace the circle!
